10+ Cruises: 80s

The Good, the Bad, and the Greedy.

My first cruise since Covid and a lot has changed. The ships are bigger (which is not a plus for me as I prefer smaller ships). The Medallion system is new to me and makes life easier than carrying a key card. But much of what I love about Princess is the same. The crew is fantastic - warm and welcoming and friendly. Our stateroom was comfortable and we had a fantastic room steward who went above and beyond for our comfort. The food was excellent - no skimping in either quality or quantity. And there was terrific variety - something for every taste. This was planned as a holiday for my daughter and myself to give us time together as well as time for us both to just relax and unwind. We went to some of the shows which we enjoyed but did not feel it necessary to get involved in all the activities. On past cruises I was constantly playing trivia or card games or going to lectures or watching a movie or two and going dancing every evening with my late husband. This was totally different - more relaxing. My daughter and I would get up and go to the hot tubs for a bit and then swim for about an hour - hot tub again for a few minutes and then start our day and we basically had the pool to ourselves at that time of day. We used the Spa services for massages a couple of times. We knew there was a lot available to keep us occupied - if we wished, but this cruise was meant to be relaxing for us. Despite the volume of people on this cruise - the ship rarely felt overcrowded or with big lineups - with a few exceptions which I will mention later on. Embarkation was relatively quick. Because a postal strike had been threatened in Canada - we did not have our medallions mailed to us but got in a quickly moving line to pick them up when boarding the ship. We used them as room keys- they unlocked our stateroom doors as we approached them - we used them to pay for any purchases on ship - and could use them to 'find our travelling companion' which was really handy - especially in the Lido deck at mealtimes. I chose this cruise for the ports of call - places I have been to in the UK in the past and wanted my daughter to experience. I had originally planned to have a land holiday for a couple of weeks in Edinburgh but thought this would give my daughter more variety. We did not book any tours - either ship ones or land tours - but chose to do our own exploring and make use of hoho buses in the larger cities. Cobh is a delightful little town and was fun to explore. I quickly found that walking up the huge hill to the cathedral had been a lot easier the first time in my 60s than it was now in my 80s. However we had a great time- with great views from the heights and then fun meandering our way over to a local museum that was part way down the hill and exploring it before returning to ground level and the museum there dockside about all the people that left the area for North America, South America and Australia - sometimes willingly and sometimes out of desperation and sometimes unwillingly. Belfast - I stayed on the ship when we docked at Belfast but my daughter went ashore and had a great time. I was trying to get caught up on my travel letters that day. Kirkwall turned out to be my favourite port of call. It was new to me - first time I had been in Orkney and we were just blown away by the friendlimess of the people and the sights of the town. The cathedral was magnificent, the shops were charming and the local crafts were irresistable. The Viking museum was a 'must see' , as well as the lovely garden behind it. There was a local craft fair on elsewhere in town and I could not resist purchasing several unique items. The wool that is produced and knitted there is unlike any I have ever seen - so soft it is like silk. I would love to go back there again someday! Glasgow was thoroughly enjoyed. We docked at Greenock and had a choice of bus or train to get us into Glasgow and opted for the bus to see some of the countryside along the way. We arrive and within 10 minutes a HoHo bus arrived and we had a great tour of Glasgow and an excellent commentary. We thoroughly enjoyed all the sights and took a ton of photos. Eventually we went back to the Buchanan bus station to await the bus that took us back to Greenock and our ship. Invergordon - we read in CC about the total chaos the previous cruise to ours had at that port and decided that we had no wish to experience that and would have a 'sea day' ourselves. It was lovely and lazy. Edinburgh - at 7 we were told by the captain that because of high winds we would not be going to Queensferry as it would be rough seas for passengers and crew going ashore by boat - so we missed the port I as most looking forward to seeing again. However - safety is the most important thing so no complaints about missing the port. And I expect I would not have been happy had we gone through the same delays as in Dublin. Dublin - When a ship cannot dock actually in a city it goes to a smaller port - in this case Dun Laoghaire - which meant the passergers were transported to that dock in the lifeboats ( which each hold a lot of people). However - with a big ship and the people signed up for ship tours getting transported first and then the rest after - it meant an hour or more waiting in one of the lounges before even getting in the boat and though there were about 4 (possibly more as difficult to count them) that were doing the transporting - by the time our feet were on soil it was noon and we still had to take a train to Dublin. We did a Hoho bus there and got off at one point to explore a good shopping street and pick up a couple of souvenirs before completing the rest of the route. It had been such chaos getting on shore that my daughter urged me to head back at 3 so that we were sure to get a boat back and on ship by 5. We wound up only having 3 hours in Dublin and not getting to explore at all- simply view from the bus. There are too many people on these big ships to make these kind of stops work successfully unless they book ship tours and I heartedly resent being forced to purchase something I do not want in order to get off the ship promptly. Or else they need to use far more of their boats to ferry more passengers to shore more quickly. This was a big negative as far as I am concerned. Le Havre - a lovely little port of call to explore with lots to see and lovely shops and well worth a visit - not just as a stepping stone to other destinations. We walked around for hours and thoroughly enjoyed it. There was a shuttle service from the ship to the center of town and back to the ship. There was one other issue I had with the changes that Princess had made. I have cruised a good amount with Princess as well as with Norwegian and Holland America and even a couple with MSC. In the past I have always purchased internet services on board, any shopping was added to our bill as well as any liquor purchased and of course our gratuities. I was told this time that could not be done and in order to have internet I had to order a package. This package included internet, liquor (up to 15 drinks a day- which amount I would never drink), 2 specialty desserts (which I also would not touch as they looked like about 1000 calories each), 2 fitness sessions (which I would also never use - are they meant to offset the specialty dessert calories?) gratuities - which I always pay anyway and I believe some coffees (which I do not drink). At about $60 US a day for 12 days that is $720 US for the cruise which converts to about $1000 CAN. Then to add to the search for extra profits - if one person in the stateroom has this package then all members in the stateroom muct have it. My daughter purchased this for me as a surprise as she knew I wanted internet to stay in touch at home. I was really annoyed by this - not by her doing it for me - but the fact that she had to get two of these packages that are full of things I did not need nor want and did not use. And I have reimbursed her for that as did not feel it was fair at all for her to have to pay that much just to get internet for me. Once we were on ship there was a notice in our stateroom that I could purchase that package at half price because of my cruises in the past with Princess - but it was too late then and at no time I was told this in advance when talking with Princess - where I did the booking. Despite a few disappoints during the cruise - we thoroughly enjoyed it and I would happily do it again - in the hopes of manging to visit all the ports of call - plus the fact that the crew was so terrific to us. Disembarkation was a snap as we decided we had no trouble walking off with our cases. The time we would have been given had we put our cases out was 10:30. By walking out ourselves with our cases we cleared customs, got a taxi to the train station, and got on a train for Portsmouth and were in our hotel room there by shortly after 9:00 a.m. Fast and easy!

Wonderful birthday cruise

My wife had never visited the British Isles before, so we decided to rectify that with a cruise to celebrate her birthday. It was magical for the most part. Normandy being on the itinerary was a major factor in choosing this sailing. I got a great deal on an aft suite so decided to splurge a bit. The cabin and it's enormous balcony was incredible. The crew was very friendly and extremely helpful at every turn, especially the staff in the Concierge lounge. We found the ship to be in excellent shape overall, despite what some other reviewers have said. Food: buffet was buffet food. Excellent breakfast at Sabatini's, not as good for dinner. Crown Grill was excellent all 3 times we dined there (enormous lobster tails!). Main dining room was very good. We also splurged on the Chef's Table dinner - an experience not to be missed! I have to take exception with a previous reviewer who said "the captain decided to skip Liverpool." Winds there were excessive and the floating dock was bouncing all over the place to the point where the port authorities wouldn't allow the Regal to dock. Certainly very disappointing but understandable. I received a surprise invitation to tour the bridge, where I spoke to an officer who told me the captain was beyond upset at having to miss Liverpool. The minor delay at Glasgow was caused by exceedingly strong currents that actually caused one of the tethering ropes to snap. And, yes, the 3 AM announcements looking for a passenger were annoying. Oh, well. All in all, a great and memorable cruise. We have 3 more Princess cruises booked and hope they all turn out as special as this one.

Felt Regal in the British Isles

Our fifth time one Regal Princess so it felt like coming to cruise ship home. The ship just returned from the recent dry dock she was beautiful. The service throughout the ship , dining in the Reserve Dining room was terrific. Dining in the Crown Grill was outstanding and continues to be our favorite steak house on the seas. It was truly a great cruise! Our cabin, Reserve Mini Suite was midship and perfect location for dining, shops, casino, Piazza and all our favorite bars. On of the best things about Princess Cruises is live music throughout the ship. The "Princess Orchestra" in the Theater is truly the best musicians on board. Our excursions weee great all organized, although getting off the tenders in Wales was a tad chaotic and unorganized. The queue for the coaches were in a small space. We did a small tour separate from Princess with a small group. Disembarking the ship was quick and efficient. Great cruise.
