Cruising offers you the world’s cuisine and more the moment you book (and download our app…). East Asian delicacies all the way through to typical American hamburgers - cruising has it all. What’s less thought about, however, is the variants of pancakes that are actually eaten throughout the world. Light, sweet and fluffy to thick, fried and savoury - this planet offers the absolute most when it comes to pancakes… and cruising is definitely the easiest way to see all cuisine.

1. American & Canadian Buttermilk Pancakes

Oh the typical thick, fluffy, syrup-y pancakes we all know and love. 6 huge pancakes, piled on top of eachother, doused in sweet maple syrup and fresh fruit. HOWEVER. What North American food does best is it takes the stereotype and flips it on its head by throwing bacon and syrup onto their pancakes - and it’s possibly the most popular blend of flavours across the northern part of the continent.

2. English Pancakes with Sugar & Lemon

The iconic English pancake is a very thin layer of batter, lined across a frying pan and allowed to cook for mere minutes before flipping it and taking it off the head. Millimetres thin and lined with sugar and lemon; typically folded into a rounded off triangle. FUN FACT: the top 2 British pancake flavours are sugar & lemon and Nutella! I’m more of a Nutella person myself.

3. French Crepes

Whatever the English and Americans do, the French do better. Crepes are a staple part of the cuisine in France and can be made both savoury and sweet. During my trip to France I noticed that they sell crepes with a nut-flavoured chocolate spread inside packets, catered for a quick snack or a lunchbox dessert. Stunning in both texture and flavour!

4. Mexican Hotcakes

Mexican hotcakes is a small twist on the traditional USA and Canadian pancake recipe; they keep the delicious fluffy interior and crispy exterior, but combine cinnamon inside to give a sweet spice to the mix. A great topping for these pancakes is cajeta, a thick spiced goat's milk caramel!

5. Swedish Raggmunk

Halla! Raggmunk, Snalla! Swedish Raggmunk is an incredible take on the stereotypical dessert style pancake… because it’s not a dessert! It’s a savoury, crispy potato pancake that is usually served as a starting course. It can, of course, be topped with salts and vegetables and can sometimes even be cooked with vegetables inside. It’s a staple dish in Sweden and is nationally loved and recognised.

6. Indian Uttapam

Indian cuisine is my favourite and I haven’t had the fortune of eating true Indian food in the country, however, this style of pancake will be the first thing I venture out to find whenever I decide to book myself a south Asian cruise. A blended batter of fermented rice and black lentils, combined with mixed spices and chopped onions is all you need to complete this incredible looking pancake. This is a savoury dish catered to those who enjoy something on the side of their prepared ordinary meal.

That finally finishes my short list of some of the pancakes found around the world. Which pancake sounds like something you’d eat and why? Message us on our Instagram @mykindofcruise and tell us why!
