Weapons, illegal drugs, explosives, flammable substances and other hazardous materials are generally prohibited. This can include firearms, ammunition, knives intended as weapons, fireworks, pepper spray and fuel. Items that could endanger passengers or crew may be confiscated and may also lead to refusal of boarding or further action.

Many cruise lines prohibit personal irons, steamers, kettles, hot plates, toasters and other appliances with exposed heating elements because of the fire risk. Hairdryers, straighteners and approved personal medical equipment may be treated differently, but you should check the specific policy before travelling

Alcohol policies differ considerably. Some lines allow limited quantities of wine or champagne under certain conditions, while others prohibit bringing alcohol onboard. Homemade food, fresh produce, meat, dairy products and other restricted items may also be refused, particularly when crossing international borders. Follow the cruise line’s guidance and declare permitted items when required.

Drones and remote-controlled aircraft are commonly restricted, either from being brought onboard or from being operated on the ship or in port. Hoverboards, e-scooters with certain battery types and other equipment may also be prohibited. Sporting equipment, including diving knives, bicycles and fishing gear, can have separate rules or may need to be stored by the cruise line.

Prescription medicines, essential mobility aids and approved medical equipment are usually permitted, but keep medicines in their original packaging and carry supporting documentation where appropriate. Scissors, nail files, razors and similar personal items may be allowed within limits, while larger or sharper items can be restricted. Contact the cruise line in advance if you need to bring medical supplies or specialist equipment.

The item may be held, removed, stored until the end of the voyage or disposed of, depending on the cruise line’s policy. Some items may result in denied boarding or involvement from port or law-enforcement authorities. If you are unsure about an item, ask the cruise line before travelling rather than packing it and risking delays at embarkation.
