Usually, a person under 18 cannot enter a cruise booking contract independently. However, an adult can generally book a cruise for them, subject to the cruise line’s minimum-age rules and booking conditions. The rules differ between cruise lines, ships and itineraries, so check the requirements before paying a deposit.
Some cruise lines allow young adults aged 18 or over to travel independently, while others require guests below 21 or 25 to travel with an older adult. The relevant age is often the traveller’s age on the day of embarkation, but this can vary.

There is no single UK-wide cruise age restriction. Each cruise line sets its own rules. Many require anyone under 18 to travel with a parent, legal guardian or responsible adult, while some apply additional conditions to guests under 21. Certain itineraries, including sailings from or visiting the United States, may have stricter requirements.
Some lines also set minimum ages for babies and children, and these can be higher for longer, remote or consecutive-day-at-sea itineraries. Always check the policy for your specific sailing rather than relying on the ship’s general age guidance.

Sometimes, but usually not alone. An under-18 may be able to travel with another adult who is not their parent, such as a relative or family friend, if the cruise line permits it. The adult may need to be in the same cabin or in a nearby cabin, and some cruise lines require a signed authorisation from a parent or legal guardian.
Requirements can include proof of the adult’s relationship or authority, a parental consent letter, emergency contact details and documents confirming who is responsible for the minor during the holiday. Ask for the exact requirements before booking because missing paperwork can prevent boarding.

Young adults aged 18 to 20 may be able to travel independently on some cruise lines, particularly on selected itineraries, but this is not universal. Other lines require at least one guest in the booking to be 21 or older, or set a higher minimum age for guests travelling without a parent or guardian.
Cabin allocation rules can also apply. A cruise line may require an older adult to occupy the same cabin as younger guests, or may allow nearby cabins only if they are connected or booked under specific conditions. Confirm the age policy for every guest before making a young adult cruise holiday booking.

These cruise rules for minors can vary by itinerary and port. Check the cruise line’s current terms and the entry requirements for every country on the route.

The safest approach is to confirm the policy with the cruise line or a cruise adviser before booking. Rules can change and may be stricter than general UK guidance, especially for guests travelling without parents or on international itineraries.
