Cruise disembarkation is the process of leaving the ship at the end of your holiday. On the last evening, the cruise team will usually provide instructions explaining when to put your luggage outside your cabin, where to meet and when you can leave. Passengers are often allocated disembarkation groups or luggage tags, based on their onward travel plans and the practical arrangements at the port.

You will normally need to settle your onboard account, keep essential items with you overnight and leave the ship during the allocated time on the morning of arrival. Follow the ship’s instructions carefully, as the procedure can vary by cruise line, ship and port.

Most passengers leave the ship in the morning, but the exact time depends on the arrival time, port procedures, local authorities and how quickly the ship is cleared. Your disembarkation instructions will normally give an estimated time or a meeting point rather than guaranteeing an exact departure time.

Do not book a very early flight or other onward transport without allowing plenty of time for disembarkation, luggage collection, customs and the journey to the airport or station. Port traffic and operational delays can affect your plans.

You may be able to request a preferred time, particularly if you have a flight, rail journey or cruise line transfer booked. However, times are not always guaranteed and availability may be limited. Some ships offer self-assist disembarkation, allowing eligible passengers to leave earlier while carrying all their own luggage off the ship.

Self-assist departure may not be suitable if you have mobility difficulties, large or heavy bags, young children or more luggage than you can manage safely. Ask the onboard guest services team about the available options and any accessibility support before the final evening.

If you are not using self-assist departure, you will usually receive luggage tags and instructions to place your larger bags outside your cabin on the final night. Keep your passport, travel documents, medication, valuables, toiletries, a change of clothes and anything needed for your journey in a separate hand luggage bag.

The crew will collect the labelled bags and place them in the terminal for collection after you leave the ship. Check the tag number carefully and keep the matching receipt or confirmation if one is provided. You will then collect your luggage before completing the cruise customs process. Customs and immigration requirements depend on the country you are entering, so follow the instructions from the ship and local authorities and declare any required goods.

Review your onboard account before disembarkation and query any unfamiliar charge with guest services while you are still on board. If you have linked a payment card, the final amount may be processed automatically according to the cruise line’s procedures.

Allow time for the complete last-day process: leaving the ship, finding your cruise luggage, passing through customs or immigration and travelling to your airport, hotel or station. Cruise line transfers can simplify the journey, while independent travel gives you more flexibility but means you must arrange suitable transport and allow for possible delays.
