Most cruise lines can accommodate gluten-free diets, including requirements related to coeliac disease, but the available food and arrangements vary by cruise line and ship. You should contact the cruise line or your cruise agent as early as possible to explain your needs and check the current policy.

Tell the cruise line about your dietary restriction when booking, or submit its special-dietary-needs form within the required timeframe. Include whether you need a strictly gluten-free diet because of coeliac disease or an allergy. It is also helpful to remind the onboard dining team when you check in and when you visit each restaurant.

Options may include naturally gluten-free dishes such as meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, rice and some salads, together with specially prepared alternatives such as gluten-free bread, pasta, desserts or breakfast items. Availability differs between the buffet, main dining room, speciality restaurants and room service, so ask staff which dishes are suitable rather than relying on menu descriptions alone.

Explain the seriousness of your restriction to the maître d’, restaurant manager or chef. They may be able to prepare food separately, use clean utensils and provide packaged products, but procedures are not identical on every ship. Buffets can present a higher cross-contamination risk, so individually prepared meals or served dining may be more suitable. Ask how food is prepared if even small traces of gluten could make you unwell

Carry any required medication and bring suitable snacks for travel days, excursions and situations where a requested item is unavailable. Check the cruise line’s policy before departure, keep a written note explaining your dietary needs, and speak to the onboard dining team on embarkation day. If your needs are medically critical, confirm that the cruise line can safely meet them before you travel.
