La Paz is located on a large bay on the Sea of Cortes, looking out from the downtown core you see the Mogote Peninsula with its many varieties of birds. The romantic seaside walkway (the Malecon) is the vantage point for stunning sunsets and early morning walks. Relax on a waterside bench and enjoy the activity of local fishing boats and sailboats from around the world. The Cathedral de Nuestra Senora de la Paz was built in 1861 replaces the original mission built by Jesuit missionaries in 1720. Museo Regional de Antropologia e Historia exhibits the history of the peninsula from prehistory to the Revolution of 1910. The gift shop sells ceramic pieces and replicas of Aztec, Toltec and other pre-Colombian people's art works. The most exciting snorkelling is off shore at the islands of Espiritu Santo, Partida and Los Islotes with secluded beaches and crystal clear waters where you can swim with the sea lions and see tropical fish.
