2-5 Cruises: 50s

Expectations met .......and exceeded

I cruised Royal Caribbean and Celebrity a while ago , I haven't cruised on any of the other up market brands on the market therefore I have no comparison for Explora but that may be no bad thing , whats wrong with just reviewing in isolation .... I had seen some You Tube videos and read some reviews but so had a bit of an idea , had some context and therefore some expectations. Boarding process was a breeze , entering the suite and getting luggage all seamless Suite was lovely , can't really fault it , all nice palettes and beautifully put together , want to pay more , get a bigger version of the standard The food selection throughout was fantastic as was the quality , all restaurants were great , Sakura was my wife's favourite , I liked them all Service from suite to restaurants to Emporium and pool side was exemplary , the ethos of the staff was consistent throughout , I can't single anyone person out , didn't have a picture with any , just thought they were all well trained and embodied the spirit of the ship The ship never felt busy even on a sea day and I do think they were at near full occupancy , I felt this was wonderful , there was a serenity and calmness that resonated throughout the ship The whole ship has been curated beautifully throughout , I think the design is flawless . If and only if you were nitpicking : A) Poolside food service - I think they want a beach club vibe , well back it up with some food , it was sometimes a pain to get up and go to Emporium when you are all hot and bothered B) No real shady areas so when one seeks sanctuary in a pool side bar area it would be nice if these were air conditioned C) The entertainment didn't really energise the room until later in the cruise when they had the singing group together , they were really good for 45 minutes , the room was full and the slightly annoying cruise director ended their session , they took a break and came back as a duo but the room had emptied and puff the atmosphere gone In conclusion , would I book again , too bloody right I would , I normally find fault and can be harsh if standards and expectations aren't met , in this instance i felt they were exceeded and I think that Explora has executed their plan perfectly in my eyes , ie converting someone back to cruising in a style and fashion that would be hard to match elsewhere , I cannot see myself being exiled to a section of a Celebrity cruise in "The Retreat" , here on Explora you got to enjoy the whole ship , bow to stern !

10+ Cruises: 60s

First timers on Explora mostly good!

We are a couple in our mid to late 60's and have cruised a lot with Seabourn, Crystal, Oceania and Regent so consider ourselves well travelled. We decided to try Explora and had a great time. The best part about this cruise is the ship. It's gorgeous, well laid out and you feel like you are on land at a very elegant, modern hotel. Our room was superb. We had an OT4 on the 10th floor. The bathroom and shower were well laid out other than the shower which seemed to cause a lot of water on the floor, very small criticism. The bed was great, the storage more than adequate for the two of us who both always over pack. The staff was excellent and all geared to providing service. Some of the negative were the dining. We thought the food was good to very good in most places. We didn't care for Marble and Co but we have excellent restaurants like this where we live and felt this was sub par. Sakura was excellent, we ate there twice. We thought the Med Yacht Club was mediocre with a very eclectic menu that didn't go together. Fil Rouge was good to very good. The Emporium Market Place was very good, lots of selection and everything was fresh. Some nights we just felt like a lighter bite and sitting outside dining here was excellent. Our main complaint with the restaurants is that the menu never changed. We were on the cruise for 14 days and after a while we would have like a bit more variety. In addition, as I have previously read here, the wine selection is somewhat subpar. For a line that considers itself premium they need to up their game in this regard. Finally, we didn't realize that the majority of the passengers on our ship were getting off after 7 days. We met some lovely people the first week and the second week it was like starting over again. Our criticisms are fairly minor in the scheme of things. Overall the cruise was excellent and the attractiveness of the ship combined with the level of service will definitely bring us back.

10+ Cruises: 60s

Explora 1 lives up to hype

I was on this cruise with 9 people in 5 rooms. I am a very experienced cruiser with 50+ cruises under my belt having gone on most cruise lines. As my kids have aged up, I have been going on more and more luxury lines and this was the first time I brought some of my kids on a luxury ship as well. Explora is a newer line, and they still have some work to do. However, 2 of the people with us had previously been on Explora and had submitted their comments for improvement and most were listened to and addressed which is very promising. Where Explora gets top marks is it's food. I believe they have the best food at sea right now, and I've been on Crystal, Regent, Silversea, Oceania, etc,,. The food is fantastic and their buffet, which I know has been praised extensively by others, is simply fantastic. It is not a buffet----more a food court with different areas where they serve you and cook food fresh. For Lunch and Dinner, they have sushi and seafood stations and the dinner seafood station had lobster, crab, oysters, you name it. Plus much, much more. Every restaurant was great. If a meal wasn't at least an 8/10 we were disappointed because that was out of character. Service levels were very high, just under Crystal and Regent but they have a newer staff in fairness. For a luxury line, they had the youngest passengers I've seen, and be forewarned that during the summer you will see a lot of kids. We were on for 2 weeks both had about 100 out of 800 passengers under 18(though very well behaved for most part I must say--and I was told this is only during the summer where they have this many children on board). Average age was in the 40s though I'm told that's higher when kids aren't out of school. Entertainment was a weaker point, though they have a great Cruise Director now(Martyn) and his staff of two were very good and there were some daily trivias. They only had singers on the ship both as regular performers and the guest performer was only one singer in week one, and 2 singers in week 2. Would be nice to see a comedian, a variety performer, something else. Food variety needs to improved for longer voyages though they have added daily specials in every restaurant. Gym was too small, and only 4 self serve laundry machines for the whole ship which should be improved upon. On the positive side, the ship is very nice, staff very good, rooms were good, overall very pleased with this cruise and booked another cruise on Explora for early next year and expect they will be in my rotation now depending on ports. I will leave a longer review on the Explora board.
