Wonderfully relaxing, easy cruise
My first Princess cruise - I was very impressed! I was traveling solo. As I always do, I attended the solo travelers meeting the first few nights. That sort of fizzled out. But, the much larger LGBTQ+ group was meeting right next door and they kindly adopted me. They proved to be lovely buddies throughout the cruise. I booked two weeks before the cruise left port. My husband has dementia and is not able to travel. I badly needed a restful break, but am not able to plan far ahead. It was perfect because I got an excellent price on a mini-balcony suite all to myself. It's an older ship, but still lovely and in great condition. My space was perfect, as was my steward, Winston. It had a great bed, lots of pillows, huge closet, lots of drawers and other storage. I chose the Princess Premier option. It provided unlimited beverages, specialty restaurant meals and other things that I didn't use. It was worth it, even though I am not a heavy drinker of alcohol. It included gelato, special ice creams and special desserts at any time. I felt wealthy! The entertainment team was top-notch. I went to some trivia contests with a very knowledgeable companion. "We" won! I enjoyed sharing in his glory. I learned how to throw an ax. Well, I can't really say that I "learned," because I lost both times I played it. But, it was a lot of fun. Every crew member I encountered was smiling, gracious and kind. I went to one theater show. It didn't equal ones that I have seen on Royal Caribbean or NCL. But, the singers and dancers worked as hard as they possibly could to give us a great performance. And I saw the first show! Hard to imagine that they did it all again 1 1/2 hours later. The entertainment in the atrium was very good - some of them were excellent. And we danced and danced! I felt at least 30 years younger than my 84 years. It was wonderful, although the DJ seemed to have only one beat that ran through all of his selections - not the best, we all agreed. The absolute best thing about the ship, though, was the food. I ate in the specialty dining rooms every night except one. Superb! The staff at each one came to know us. One night we wanted a dessert that was only available in a different restaurant. No problem. It came within minutes. They were all lovely and accommodating. I ate in two of the other dining rooms. Again, good food and service. The most surprising to me was the buffet. The selection of food was huge. I tried several things that I had never tasted before. All delicious. I couldn't fault any of the food I had anywhere on the ship. I ordered room twice in mid-afternoon. It was delivered quickly and was the appropriate temperature. Again, very yummy. I chose to stay on board all of the time, except when we had to disembark to go through customs in San Francisco. It was lovely to do exactly what I wanted to do, when I wanted to. I planned about 5 minutes in advance. I would definitely cruise with Princess again. Looking forward to the next one!

The Royal Reigns
This was a repositioning cruise at the end of the Alaskan season, traveling from Vancouver B.C with stops in Victoria, San Francisco, and San Diego and ending in Los Angeles. It was our 14th. on Princess and 30th. overall. Princess is our go-to line as it caters to a more mature crowd without all the trappings of an amusement park and very few children. We raised ours 50 years ago. The Royal is in great condition with all venues sparkling clean with serviceable furniture throughout. Our deluxe balcony cabin offered twin beds, fridge, desk, big T.V. and a love seat. The bathroom was standard fare with the dreaded shower curtain. An open closet with shelves had plenty of room for storage. As we had purchased the Plus Package, we took the opportunity to sample every lounge and bar on board. The three story Piazza area features most of the classy lounges with each having a different design scheme. Crooner's piano bar, Good Spirits, Bellini's Italian lounge, and the Vines wine bar were almost always at capacity. Service at all venues was prompt and friendly. Alfredo's pizza is in this area as well and must be visited for a great meal and atmosphere. We utilized the reservation system for the main dining room, but it was somewhat chaotic as people without reservations were in the same line as us and created confusion. There are three main dining rooms but we stayed with the Alegro as we befriended our waitstaff and had outstanding service throughout the cruise. I felt the menu had something for everyone every evening with a varied selection through the week. Only one meal of short rib was a clunker with tough meat, but all others were of good quality in our opinion. The presentation of all meals on the plate was done as you would find in an upscale restaurant. The Horizon buffet is an odd layout consisting of a very long dining area with all the food islands hidden in corridors between left and right sides of the room. You really have to hunt up and down to make up your plate as there didn't seem any rhyme or reason as to the way the food was presented. But, once you figure out the layout after the first day, the food was good. We felt there was enough variety for most people except if you were looking forward to a big selection of ethnic dishes. It was tough to find an empty table as the place was usually mobbed at mealtimes. My tip is always to find a table and mark it with a book or jacket first, then grab your groceries so you're not walking around and letting your stuff get cold. We enjoyed just two shows in the huge theater, a song and dance review and a magician. Several of the other shows featured soul music and were not well attended. Fifty percent of the passengers were Asian! There was a ship's orchestra playing jazz, a violinist, and a talented duo playing popular rock and country fare in the Piazza most afternoons and evenings. We didn't partake in any of the quiz and games shows as the Princess Live venue is small and jammed well before start time. The Lido deck is huge with a pool and four hot tubs. The weather on this trip was not conducive to laying out on a lounge chair for most days. The pizza and burger bar were busy as was the Mermaid's Tail bar near the pool. For a relaxing beverage, try the bar at the stern overlooking the ship's wake. Hardly anyone back there. The one thing we don't like about the Royal class ships is they don't offer a Promenade deck to walk completely around the ship on deck 7. The Sanctuary area blocks access to the bow and you must pay to use the facilities. The only way to see the ports upon arrival is to crane your neck over the side of the railing. We have been on all sizes of Princess ships and enjoy this class the best and had no complaints on this voyage. Not too small, not too large, just right with tons of variety for dining and entertainment. We'll be back!

One last cruise for Mom
My mom took me on my first cruise, on Princess to Alaska many years ago. On my latest Princess cruise, I brought Mom’s ashes, for Princess’ Ashes at Sea program. Isabella from Customer Services was wonderful! She made an appointment and on that day she helped me to the deck. As she stood back, I walked up to the railing and said ‘goodbye’ to Mom, then threw her ashes into the sea, in a water soluble container. As I watched the container bobbing the waves, I remembered how much my mom loved cruising, especially on Princess. I knew she would love this send off. The rest of the cruise I had so much fun, on board and on shore. I played some slots in the Casino (Mom’s favorite place on a cruise ship), enjoyed delicious meals, and saw great shows—all things Mom loved to do on cruises. And I did it all with her in spirit.
