Our Oosterdam cruise review
I would score our HAL cruise 11 DAY AROUND ITALY WITH THE HISTORY CHANNEL a 9/10. Our cabin was fantastic on the 6th level, Upper Verandah AFT. Our bed was the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in! The two room attendants that cleaned and looked after our cabin were brilliant, always friendly and polite. Nothing was ever a problem! We mostly dinned at the Lido on the 9th deck. We always found food fresh and the quality was excellent. Personal preference as we preferred to walk around and see all the dishes on offer. We did purchase the Have it all package which included 2 specialty Dinning settings, one at the Pinnacle Grill and one at Canaletto. When I tried to book the Canaletto, it was booked out every night of the cruise. So, if you purchase the Have it all package make sure you book your specialty dinning settings on the first day of the cruise. Shore excursions: We only booked 2 one in Civitavecchia (Rome) the other in Livorno (Florence/Pisa). Rome was very disappointing! They called it The Best of Rome, when we went to the Colosseum, we all wanted to go inside and see the inside but our tour guide said that is not included. Looking back now we should have just bought bus tickets from Civitavecchia to Rome and done our own thing. Pre booked our tickets to get into the Colosseum and the Vatican. Other ports: Kotor, Montenegro. Just walk off the ship and you are in the town centre. After seeing the town walk to the bus station (10-minute walk) and catch the bus to the cable car station. Take a ride up into the mountains and enjoy the breathtaking views. Corfu, Greece. Caught the shuttle bus into Old Town and had a good walk around for a few hours. Afterwards we got on the Hop on Hop off bus which did a tour around the island. Well worth getting off up at the top of the mountain that overlooks the bay and airport runway. Google maps call it Corfu airport Plane spotting Spot. Messina, Sicily. Walked around on our own, make sure you are at La Cattedrale Di Messina at 12.00 noon to see the midday chimes on the clock tower. Salerno, Italy. We caught a taxi to the local ferry terminal and went up the coast to Amalfi. (about a 30-minute ride) Enjoy the breathtaking views of the Amalfi Coast on the way up and back. Marseille, France. We took the $18.00 bus shuttle into the city and walked around got some lunch and then headed back to the ship. Another tip go to guest services and get the Crew Apperception Tip Charge removed. However, we did tip the two room attendants who looked after our cabin. Embarkation and Disembarkation went smoothly and was well organised. Entertainment I’d score what we saw 7/10. I think what you call typical cruise ship entertainment. Disappointing! HAL put a bottle of water in your stateroom and charged a ridiculous price to refill it, all the water outlets on the Lido deck have signs up Do Not Refill Your Bottle. We bought bottled water at Supermarkets when we went ashore and took them back to the ship.

An amazing cruise.
This was our first med cruise and other than the initial embarking at Athens which seemed to take a long time the cruise was everything we hoped for and more. The balcony room was spacious, plenty to do on board on sea days and great port stops and excursions. The food in the main dining room was excellent top notch restaurant quality. We also ate at the specialty restaurants which were great, especially if you were into large steaks. We did the package that included drinks, wifi, specialty restaurants and a few excursions. It really was excellent value. There were some really lovely bars, a good range to suit everyone, with a great range of cocktails and wines. All the staff were welcoming and the staff culture seemed excellent. Holland America do a great job in this space. Our room steward knew everyone’s name from the first day - impressive. We would sail with Holland America again in a heart beat.

Great repositioning cruise!
This was our first repositioning cruise, and we truly enjoyed it. Among the pleasant surprises was a return of classical music (piano and cello duo) in a right-sized venue, a welcome feature, given the Lincoln Center Group is no longer offered. They played multiple times, and were professional and friendly. There was also an excellent jazz combo, which played in a right-sized venue. A third welcome surprise was the presence of two excellent duplicate bridge teachers, with both beginning and intermediate bridge classes, plus sanctioned bridge play sessions on the 9 sea days. Besides these welcome entertainment options, we enjoyed our upgraded (for a modest up-charge) signature suite, excellent service, and good food at our main dining room window table for two. The ports were fine, but the sea days were just what we wanted. The only areas for improvement: very lengthy waiting to board the ship on embarkation day, despite arriving at our selected time, consistently overcooked (and dry) chicken entrees in the main dining room, and a hyped Easter Sunday brunch in the Pinnacle Grill that did not provide the 3-star Mariner discount (because it was an undisclosed "pop-up" meal). Despite this, a very enjoyable cruise.
