NE/Canada b2b in Queens Grill

So many variables aligned perfectly together to make this 14 night voyage wonderful: great weather, flat seas, far-flung scenic cruising, stellar aft deck sail-aways, the food and service in QG, and having surrounding table mates that we all started as strangers and ended as friends. Only QM2 can pull off the classic ocean liner feel with its tiered aft deck when leaving port. In fact we had a large crowd seeing us off in Quebec City reminiscent of the old-time send-offs. The ship - contrary to a very recent review QM2 is not ready for the scrap heap; she looked and operated like she is, a classy ocean liner. We actually had a stuck cabinet drawer and let the crew know and it was fixed in minutes. The QG staff are certainly stellar and I’ve never seen anyone as proactive and genuine about his flock than the QG M’d Osman. He’s a legend for a reason. The staff around the ship has greatly improved with many greetings in the hallways. My only negative would be there is still a an English language barrier with some of the crew. Q5 stateroom/suite - Tons of closet and large living area and the desk doubles as a place to eat versus eating off the coffee table as in Princess Grill or Q4’s on QE. Bed and balcony superb. The bathroom is very large but needs a design refresh. Also note that the tub is a deep jacuzzi that you have to step into to take a shower; a potential challenge for those less mobile. Only negative is the TV channel choices. I trust the TV and bathrooms will be addressed in the Spring ‘27 midlife refit. Food in QG is of the highest level. Osman encourages off-menu orders and he cooks himself table side. He made a Turkish banquet for us that tasted homemade. Almost every night we got a small extra bowl of his pasta that impressed all. Shout out also to Alvin, Andres, and Rizky working as a team for our dining. Note - We had only one not so-good meal in QG, Coquille St. Jacques. Golden Lion pub lunch was also good. We got hamburgers at the Chefs Galley in Kings Court and that was ok. We don’t go on vacation to eat hamburgers. We tried the buffet for one breakfast before going ashore and it was a madhouse; running out of mugs, bowls, coffee. All other meals in QG. Try Special chai tea in Sir Samuel’s deserves kudos too. We had six sea days on this voyage and we stayed onboard in Newport as we’ve been there many times. Entertainment - As usual, Cunard lined up excellent Insight lecture speakers and we enjoyed UK journalist Clare Balding and a Nat Geo crazy explorer. Music in the theatre included a veteran rocker, the Rhinestone Cowgirls (yes, Cunard is mixing it up) and a very funny Canadian comedian. High honors go to the love music around the ship, especially the Royal Court Orchestra. They have so much talent and are so versatile to play background for rock, country, jazz etc. Truly remarkable. The only production we didn’t like was an odd concept of having live Cunard musicians (including the also talented Brevis Strings) play with a recorded 80 piece “Cunard” orchestra that played nothing as was described. Back to the drawing board for that one. There was also a classical virtuoso pianist doing numerous live concerts. There was a ballroom dance group along for the voyage and they were respectful of others and added energy to the Queens Room. Cunard did a better job of encouraging non-ballroom dancers to dance but Cunard is still ballroom dancers forward. My only overall negative (nothing to with Cunard really) was as varied as the evening entertainment was, after several nights, it all seemed repetitive after awhile: dancing, show, trivia, lounges. I believe because we were not in a “Crossing” mindset that we felt we got into a rut. Again, more of our problem than Cunard’s. As for port stops, having an overnight stop in Quebec City was essential to really enjoy it and Newfoundland was spectacular. I’m going back there.

QM2 WOW! now I get why 'Cunarders' so dislike Anne

Bowled over by everything about the QM2. Amazing cruise. Relished every second aboard this statement classy, classic, stylish, high standard ship with a 'wow' factor on every deck! Interior decor is awe inspiring. The attention to detail beggars belief... Anne doesn't even rate a place at court in comparison... nothing wrong with a brash, brassy, in your face modern mass market ship but she could belong to any cruise line, as I said in my review of her, NOTHING indicated she was anything to do with Cunard in any way shape or form... having experienced the QM2 I fully understand now why our loyal 'Cunarder' friends are so upset by her. QM2 is totally Cunard at its best. Our cabin Queen's was spotlessly clean, large, light very comfortable. Bathroom a bit dated but served its purpose totally. Crew were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble, all were very friendly, helpful and always cheerful. Numerous areas to sit and have peace and quiet if you wanted, lots of areas to mingle with fellow passengers as well. SO much to see around the ship. Spent ages reading as many of the wonderful panels on each floor detailing Cunard's history, QM2's story and lots more, never seen anything like it on any ship before and we've done 30 cruises with various cruise lines. Food was top notch. We enjoyed every meal we had, especially the rack of Dorset lamb, flambe at our table, never tasted such tender lamb in my life before! Presentation was spot on. Generous portions, dishes full of flavour....choice very wide and varied. It is so depressing that Anne, I refuse to call her a queen as she isn't at all! is the way carnival - who don't merit a capital c, see Cunard's future. We'll never see a ship like the QM2 again and everything Cunard has stood for for so long will soon be gone as carnival take her on the downward spiral towards over crammed, middle to low standard mass market cruising which is their default level.

Wonderful experience

I was a bit anxious before the trip as I have never been on a cruise before but I loved the transatlantic crossing. We stayed in a sheltered balcony. It was great, good size and fairly in the middle of the ship so limited movement on stormy days. Staff were all amazing. Food in Britannia is like posh school dinners but we paid extra to eat in the pop up Indian and Italian and those were great. Breakfast we alternated between take out from buffet on the deck to the Corinthian to the Britannia and lunch we had sometimes at the pub or the burger place. We didn’t join many of the activities except for the many trivia quizzes and the night club . We loved that even on a ship with 2500 pax, there are enough quiet spots such as the deck, the commodore club, etc. Even in 2 days of stormy weather, the ship is very stable. I saw a previous worry about noise but rooms are very sound proof and you don’t hear the doors to the crew quarters at all. Sure the ship is not perfect, as said food is not fab and there are too many bands and live music all the time. Sometimes less is more But … and Cunard is not selling this point enough: never in my life have I had 7 days of just doing as little or as much as I want, nowhere to go, just this absolute relaxation. It’s hard to déscribe but it was such bliss. Although the buffet is a bit busy etc it also allowed us to just grab food and eat it outside on the deck or at our beach chair, grab a tea or a coffee etc. The arrival in NYC is magical. We were starboard so got up but then once docked we had the best view on Miss Liberty and manhattan from our cabin. We took our own luggage off ship and left at 7.00 am and no q at all at immigration.
