Lots of great ports

We really prefer the big ships like Allure of the Seas, but this ship was enjoyable to sail on as well, even without quite as many activities and Park Avenue. We thought the service of the entire crew was impeccable. Our cabin stewardess was always smiling and cheerful. She didn't just clean rooms; she had a genuine interest in how our day was going. She always seemed to know when we would be out of our room so that she could have it finished when we returned. The service in the dining room was also quite good, along with the food. As for breakfast and port day lunch, we ate in the Solarium, which is a smaller dining area than the Windjammer and less hectic. Our cabin was fine. We appreciated the night light in the bathroom. Embarkation and disembarkation were very efficiently carried out. We got to lunch in the Windjammer not long after going through a quick check-in and security process. Disembarkation was a very smooth process as well. We left our luggage in the hallway outside of our door to be picked up the night before we disembarked. The luggage could be found in an area corresponding to our number. We got the luggage and walked out of the terminal to the bus that took us to the airport. There were a couple of aspects we found unfavorable, but they didn't destroy our overall enjoyment of the trip. One was the extremely, ear-splitting music in the Royal Theater for the shows. Even with noise cancelling headphones, my husband and I had to leave the shows after just one song. I've mentioned this to them before, and nothing seems to change. This is a problem along the entire cruise line. Keep in mind that people can suffer from permanent hearing loss from sustained listening to noise as loud as from the shows. Also, while the food in the dining room was excellent in taste and appearance, they didn't seem to vary it much. Salmon and roast chicken were on the menu every night. However, the waiters did their best to accommodate our requests. Make sure you check your bill every day! We were billed for four drinks when we only got two one day. Another couple I talked with had drinks billed their account and they had never even visited that particular bar. Guest services will fix this for you.

10+ Cruises: 50s

Love the Odyssey

HI all. Six of us traveled together for our Odyssey of the Seas cruise. Two of us had been to Rome before. All of us have cruised before. Spent a few days in Rome and enjoyed that--even though it was in the 90s those days. Be sure your hotel has good a/c in the summer. Sunday morning we stuck around until our 11am checkout, and took our pre-arranged van to the Civitavecchia port. Took a little over an hour. The port area is huge and now I understand why people on this Board said make sure your car company takes you INTO the port so you don't have to walk all the way to the ship from the entrance of the port. When we saw how far it was, we were glad our drop-off was ship-side. There are no porters who come out to take your luggage (not that we saw anyway). You bring your tagged bag into a huge room and it is wheeled to the back where the crew gets it onto the ship. Make sure it is tagged! Then onto Security check, up an escalator to check-in. The whole process was pretty quick, and onboard we went! Wandered around the ship a little and then stopped at our balcony cabin. We had 2 balcony cabins near each other, and one other person in an interior cabin that was near us on deck 10 aft. Cabin was typical of the Quantum class. I like these cabins. Our bed was by the balcony. Plenty of storage, and even plenty of hangers which doesn't always happen. Love the bathroom nightlight. My nephew slept on the couch that was made up in his parents' cabin, but it was not so comfortable for a teenager. The inside cabin was quite spacious and well laid out. Note that the balcony chairs are ziptied but on a semi-reclined chair position, so we didn't find it to be a problem. I guess the sign on the chair "do not lay flat" proved insufficient. Footstools and a small table on the balcony as well. Wandered to the Windjammer which had a large selection of food options. I missed the outdoor seating area at the back of the Windjammer like Anthem has. We could always find something we liked in the WJ. Solarium Bistro was nice too, just a much smaller scale of food options. We didn't eat at Cafe 270. We had 5:30pm (early) dining time and the six of us were seated together at a lovely window table. 8:30 was late seating time. The food was good and our servers, Bryan and Kenneth, were excellent. There were open tables in the MDR most nights. The only upcharge dining venue we used was Teppenyaki at lunchtime. The chef was entertaining and did a good job, but the two of us who ordered filet mignon find it hard to believe that the cut actually was filet mignon as it was tough and chewy. One other's strip steak was more tender. I did mention this upon our leaving Teppanyaki, but never heard anything. So just note--if you like your filet mignon soft and tender, this isn't the place to get it. That was the only disappointment with Teppanyaki, but it was a big one. We ate at El Loco Fresh once and it was good. There is no Johnny Rockets on this ship. Lobster fans--there is no lobster night on European cruises. MyTime dining is 7:15-9:30. We stopped doing MyTime when they made the option window start so late. Note to those familiar with Coconut Ranger cookies. The ones in Europe are different from what is served on US-based RC ships. Did not like them, so I saved myself a lot of calories. We did not go to the Top Tier party. The outdoor movie screen seemed to be in a weird space by a pool with insufficient seating. Lots of great backgrounds for good photo opportunities around dinnertime every night. The FlowRider was busy. The big yellow ball thing on the port side aft top deck has a nice viewing area. At night it has blinking lights on it--all night--so if you like your curtains open at night, the port side aft may not be where you want your cabin. Northstar goes left and right over the side of the ship (not sure we ever did this on Anthem; I think it only moved a little to the left or right). But it is expensive to do on a sea day. We did it enough on Anthem when it was part of your cruise fare so I'm not paying to do it. Crown Lounge was very nice and large. Had a wonderful sea view with its large windows. The coffee machine was wonderful and we had daily cappuccino here. Assorted food in the morning that did not vary much, and we only wandered in during one evening happy hour and I don't recall what food was out so I can't say much about that offering. Solarium had various warm and cooler areas. The pools and hot tubs could be very crowded. On the front lower level of the Solarium you can access an outside area over the bridge wings. One of the main area pools had to be closed to be drained, cleaned, and refilled three times due to floating toxins. The captain was not happy about this! Parents need to keep a better eye on their kids and NO DIAPERS in the pools! How is this not comment knowledge and decency. There were A LOT of kids on this cruise as it is summertime. And a lot running and jumping in the cabins around us. Annoying and inconsiderate. Production shows in the theater are becoming more rare. We did not go see the male singer. We did go to one show about Showgirls and it was good. The Book was just ok; the actors/singers were good. Played a lot of trivia games and got a few cute prizes like zipper pulls and a bottle opener. The Taylor Swift Name that Tune was packed (I don't know her music so we gave up our seats at the Schooner bar to people who wanted to play the game). Groups of girls were sitting on the floor since there was no seating left. No other trivia like 70s, 80s, Beatles, or One Hit Wonders, had this # in attendance. If like us you are used to Music Hall on Anthem, the layout of this one is a little different--seating, bar locations, etc. Still a great venue. We paid attention to the Captain's announcements to know when we would be going through the Strait of Messina, and other useful information he gave out. He is from Poland. CD is from Italy and very entertaining. While there were a lot of Americans onboard, there were also a lot of Europeans. PORTS Santorini. I had read how tendering was a big pain and you had to have a ship-sponsored excursion to be off before mid-afternoon. Not true. I checked with the Concierge who told me that it should be open tendering with no wait after 1pm (we arrived at 11). Tender tickets would be issued morning before our Santorini stop outside Music Hall--the distribution was supposed to begin at 8am, however, my bro and SIL went down at 7am and there was already a long line. Fortunately Royal started distributing around 7:30 to keep things moving. We got group 4 and we were called shortly after 11am. So that worked out just fine. 3 of us took the tram up the steep hill and 3 others walked up. We arrived around the same time. 10 euro each way to use tram that is a six seater in a chain of six cars. So 36 people can go at a time. Fira was a nice town to wander for a bit. We had booked a private catamaran excursion, and met up with our driver to get to the marina so we could explore Santorini from the sea for the afternoon. There is a Santorini excursion you can buy once onboard, not before, for $25 you get a priority tender to the island, and then a bus to Fira. Kudaski, Turkey. We did a private excursion to the Ephesus ruins. Our guide was knowledgeable and it was a great history lesson. Be aware the marble can be slippery even when dry, and it is a lot of walking, so be careful. We all had a slip of the foot here and there. Note that the amphitheater there is currently closed for work. Also be aware that at some point on most tours you will be taken to a carpet store when they will try to sell you their wares. I had specifically asked that this NOT happen, but it did anyway, and we politely said we do not want to buy a carpet and we can go now. They kept putting out more and more carpets on the floor; I felt bad for the people who would have to roll them all back up. The port area has a lot of items for sale. We tried local wine at a restaurant near the ship and it was very good. Very hot here too and we had plenty of water and an umbrella ,and also water bottle to spray mist. Mykonos. 4 went to explore on their own, and 2 of us took the ship-sponsored Delos tour. The only reason we booked ship-sponsored was because up until sailing time, this was supposed to be a tender port. Turns out we docked while 2 other ships anchored. Very windy here; one of our lines snapped so the engines had to be kept running to keep us pushed up to the dock. Since the ship docks a bit outside the Old City, we took a small ferry to the Old City where we boarded the larger ferry to Delos for the ~30 minute ride. Bathrooms and snacks and drinks for sale on the larger ferry. Tour was very good and we enjoyed it and got some good pics. After the ferry ride back to Mykonos, we wandered around a bit, then used the ticket for the water taxi back to the ship dock. Naples. Booked a last-minute private ride to check out the Amalfi Coast and it was great. Enjoyed pizza and cocktails at a few places along the way. Saw Mt. Vesuvius. Saw the huge lemons growing on many trees. A lot of switchback roads. Beautiful coastline. Beaches are rocky. Back to Civitavecchia. We arrived at the dock early and walk-off started around 6:30am. Our ride wasn't coming till 7:30, so we headed down to deck 5 at 7:15 and we had no line to leave the ship. Could not have taken more than 10 minutes from the time we left our cabin to meeting our driver outside. Odyssey of the Seas started sailing in 2021 and it is still in very good condition. We love this class of ship and would not hesitate to book Odyssey again. Although it was hot and I would not do a European cruise in summer again, we did enjoy it and we had calm seas 99% of the time. Not a drop of rain at all.

6-10 Cruises: 40s

Chops Grills was Awsome! Bad experience on Turkey.

Overall, I was very happy with our cruise on the Odyssey of the Seas. We purchased the unlimited specialty dining and unlimited drinking package since this was a 14-day cruise and we had eight days at sea and could take advantage of specialty dining on sea days as well. We ate most of our meals at the specialty dining restaurants, the majority at Chops Grille. The wait crew was top notch. Very attentive and went out of their way to accommodate our preferences. We were greeted by name and seated us in our favorite spot. The filet was always cooked to perfection. I tried everything on the menu but always came back to the filet. In Barcelona, we had an excursion that started at 4 p.m. so we returned to the ship just before all the restaurants were closing. My husband ran up to chops, they took his order and coordinated to delivery to our room with room service. We weren't aware of Players Club until the day before we left, which would have been great on this day. We also ate at Giovannis, Teppanyaki and Wonderland several time and had equally good service and food. The appetizers at Wonderland were my favorite meal of the entire trip. We booked all our excursions through Royal Caribbean. The only negative was our excursion in Ephesus, Turkey. At the conclusion of the excursion, there was a scheduled stop for a 'master rug weaver demonstration.' As we exited the bus, we were immediately met by several men who actively directed us the short distance towards a store entrance. Upon being ushered to the second floor, we quickly noticed that only about 10 people from our bus, out of the entire group, had accompanied us. Our tour guide stated she would remain until the last person left the rug demonstration, and would then provide directions back to the ship. However, what followed was not a rug weaving demonstration beyond a brief showing of silk worm cocoons. We were then led into a large room where a variety of rugs were displayed. Soon after, four men entered the room, ostensibly to 'answer questions' about the rugs. After showing a little interest in couple of rugs, we were then taken to the third floor to view more colors. At this point, we were placed alone in another room with just two men. This separation from the rest of the small group, and the complete absence of our tour guide, made me feel intensely uncomfortable and isolated. We clearly stated that we had an appointment and needed to meet up with friends. We felt a strong sense of pressure to remain and purchase a rug. My husband even commented, 'I think our tour guide abandoned us.' One of the men responded, 'No, she is downstairs.' We reiterated that we had an appointment and needed to leave. When we attempted to take the stairs down to the first floor, we were pressured into using an elevator instead. Upon reaching the first floor and heading towards the main exit, we found both doors closed and locked, and there were no other customers in the store. We were told the tour guide was 'in the back,' but we firmly insisted that we had to depart. We were unsure if she was truly there, but we were unwilling to go back further into the store, and critically, we did not receive any clear directions back to the ship. When we subsequently asked other shopkeepers for directions to the ship, they simply directed us through more shops, further exacerbating our feeling of being steered and unassisted. This isolated and high-pressure sales tactic, combined with feeling trapped and without our tour guide's assistance, was a significant cause for concern and negatively impacted our sense of security during an otherwise pleasant excursion.
